Naples Trip Cost 2026: The Cheapest Great City in Italy

Naples is what happens when a great city declines to gentrify on schedule. It is loud, graffitied, gloriously unrenovated in patches, and it serves the best pizza on the planet for the price of an airport coffee. It is also, by a comfortable margin, the cheapest of Italy's great cities, and this year the flights joined the discount: Naples made the fare trackers' list of European cities with dropping summer prices.

Add Pompeii on the commuter line and the Amalfi Coast a ferry away, and the value case writes itself. Here are the numbers.

The budget frame

Per person per day, from our calculator dataset:

Budget: 60 to 75 dollars. B&B rooms in the centro storico at 50 to 70 a night, pizza and fried-food street meals at 5 to 10, metro and funiculars, one paid sight daily.

Mid-range: 120 to 140. Boutique hotel doubles at 80 to 120, trattoria dinners for two at 40 to 60, coast and ruins day trips.

Five days for two, mid-range, on the ground: about 1,500 dollars, Pompeii and a coast day included. The same itinerary based in Sorrento or Positano: add 60 to 100 percent to lodging alone. Naples as base camp is the entire strategy.

Eating for almost nothing, magnificently

The pizza is the budget headline and deserves it: at the legendary places, Da Michele, Sorbillo, Di Matteo, a margherita runs 4 to 7 dollars, and the line moves fast because Neapolitans do not linger over perfection, they administer it. Fried pizza, cuoppo cones of seafood, sfogliatella pastries: all 2 to 5. An espresso, taken standing, correctly, 1.20.

The full trattoria experience, pasta alle vongole and grilled fish and house white in the Spanish Quarter: 40 to 60 dollars for two. The splurge tier exists, Michelin stars on the seafront, at prices Rome charges for adequacy.

A day of world-class eating in Naples costs what a single tourist-trap dinner costs in Venice. That asymmetry never stops being funny.

The day trips, priced honestly

Pompeii: 19 euros in, the rattling Circumvesuviana train 3 each way, and the site demands a full day and good shoes. Guiding matters here more than most places; the ruins are mute without context. Options ladder: a WeGoTrip self-guided audio tour with ticket at 15 to 25 dollars per person, group tours at 40 to 50, private archaeologists at 150 plus. Tiqets sells the timed entries when the ticket office queue coils in July; our Tiqets review explains the skip-the-line mechanics.

Herculaneum, smaller and better preserved, same train, 16 euros, half a day, and connoisseurs whisper it beats Pompeii.

Vesuvius: bus-plus-entry packages at 25 to 35 dollars put you on the crater rim staring into the thing that did it.

The Amalfi run: summer ferries direct from Naples to Positano and Amalfi at 25 to 35 dollars round trip turn the world's most expensive coastline into a day trip from a cheap bed. Capri ferries similar, plus the island's own price theater once ashore. One coast day from Naples for two: 100 to 160 dollars all-in, versus staying out there at 400 a night.

Logistics and street wisdom

Fly direct: Naples airport sits practically in the city, with a 5 euro Alibus to the center or a fixed 20 to 25 euro official taxi rate, and budget carriers connect all of Europe at 40 to 150 round trip on the right days. Live fares on the route page. From the US, one-stops via Rome or hubs run 700 to 1,000.

Transit: the metro's art stations, the funiculars up to Vomero, 1.30 a ride. Walking the centro storico is the main event anyway; it is a UNESCO site pretending to be a traffic hazard.

The safety talk, honestly: Naples's reputation is a decade stale. The tourist zones bustle late and safely. The one live risk is phone-snatching, occasionally by scooter, so phones stay off outer table edges and out of loose back pockets, the same physics as Barcelona or Paris. Our money safety system covers the rest.

As Lonely Planet's Italy correspondent put it in this year's coverage of the city's renaissance:

Naples has stopped apologizing. The travelers arriving now find the most Italian city in Italy, at prices from another era.

That is the trade in one line. Rome charges admission to its past; Naples just lives in its own, loudly, and hands you a 5 dollar pizza while you watch. Run the week through the calculator and see what the discount buys.

Five days, receipts included

The Naples ledger, two people, mid-range, coast day and ruins included.

Day one: Alibus in from the airport, 11 for two. Centro storico B&B with balcony theater, 88 a night. First pizza pilgrimage, 16 for two with drinks and the correct reverence. Spaccanapoli wandering, free. Evening cuoppo of fried sea things, 8. Day total with room: 123.

Day two, Pompeii: Circumvesuviana out, 7 for two. Entry, 42. WeGoTrip audio tour with the ticket bundle, worth its 40 for the pair against the mute-stones alternative. Lunch at the scavi cafe, adequate at 18. Evening back in town, pasta alla Nerano dinner, 38. Total: 233.

Day three, the coast run: early ferry to Positano, 60 round trip for two. Beach hours, lemon granita, the vertical postcard experienced without paying its hotel rates. Picnic lunch from a salumeria, 14. Return ferry, dinner in the Spanish Quarter with the neighborhood's opinions audible, 42. Total: 165.

Day four: Archaeological Museum morning, 20, where Pompeii's actual treasures live. Sfogliatella and espresso standing correctly, 6. Sansevero Chapel's veiled Christ, 24, booked ahead. Herculaneum afternoon for the completists, 39 with trains. Pizza fritta dinner, 12. Total: 189.

Day five: Castel dell'Ovo and seafront loop, free. Farewell ragu lunch at a family institution, 34. Alibus out, 11. Total: 133.

Five days, two people: about 845 dollars on the ground, both ruins and the Amalfi postcard banked, at Rome-weekend money.

Naples rules of engagement

The pizza queue protocol: the legends take no reservations; go at opening or mid-afternoon, and the line moves faster than its length suggests because turnover is the whole model.

The Circumvesuviana mindset: the ruins train is scruffy, punctual-ish and 3 dollars; treat it as local color with pickpocket awareness rather than a review-site grievance, or pay 60 for the tourist express and skip the education.

The coast day trade: day-tripping Amalfi from Naples saves 200-plus a night over sleeping out there, and the evening return to a real city's dinner prices is the trade's second dividend. Sorrento-based itineraries invert the math only for multi-day coast immersion.

The phone physics: Naples's one honest hazard rewards the same posture as Mexico City: devices off cafe table edges, cross-body bags, and the scooter lane respected as a force of nature. Meet the city on these terms and it hands you Italy's best week per dollar, loudly, with extra mozzarella.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a trip to Naples cost?expand_more

A 5-day trip for two, including Pompeii and a coast day, runs about 1,400 to 1,700 dollars on the ground at mid-range comfort, or 850 to 1,000 at budget level. That is 30 to 40 percent below equivalent Rome or Florence trips.

Is Naples cheap compared to other Italian cities?expand_more

It is the cheapest of Italy's major cities by a clear margin. Hotel doubles run 70 to 110 dollars where Rome charges 130 to 200, the legendary pizza costs 4 to 7, and a seafood dinner for two lands at 40 to 60 versus 80 plus up north.

How much does Pompeii cost to visit?expand_more

Entry is 19 euros, the Circumvesuviana train from Naples about 3 euros each way, and a good guide or audio tour 10 to 50 depending on format. A full Pompeii day for two runs 60 to 120 dollars total depending on guiding choices.

Is Naples safe for tourists?expand_more

Its reputation lags reality. The historic center and tourist zones are busy and generally safe; standard big-city rules cover the rest. Petty theft, especially phone-snatching by scooter, is the main risk, so keep devices off curbside table edges.

Should I stay in Naples or Sorrento for the Amalfi Coast?expand_more

For budgets, Naples. Sorrento and the coast towns charge double for lodging. Naples serves as a cheaper, livelier base with fast connections: Circumvesuviana or ferry to Sorrento, summer ferries direct to Positano and Amalfi.
