Vietnam Trip Cost 2026: The Best Value Destination in Asia, Priced Out

Every year some publication rediscovers Vietnam and declares it the best value in Asia, and every year they are correct. KAYAK's 2026 trend report lists it among the most searched value destinations, and the searches translate into real math: this remains a country where 60 dollars a day buys you the good version of everything.

I want to price the whole thing properly: north to south, street stall to boutique hotel, because averages hide what makes Vietnam's economics special.

The headline budget

Two people, two weeks, the classic Hanoi to Saigon route with Ha Long Bay and Hoi An in between:

StyleOn the ground, 2 weeks, two peopleWith US round-trip flights
Budget$1,100~$2,900
Mid-range$2,100~$4,300
High comfort$4,000~$6,500

The flight is the fortress: 850 to 1,200 dollars round trip from the US West Coast into Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City in normal months. Once you land, the country rewards you for every day you stay, which is why two weeks in Vietnam frequently totals less than one week in Western Europe. Compare your own dates on our route pages and watch the Aviasales calendar for the September dips.

Where the money barely goes

Food first, because Vietnam's food is both its glory and its budget anchor. A bowl of pho at a Hanoi institution: 2 dollars. Banh mi: 1.50. The bill for two at a proper sit-down restaurant with beers: 12 to 18 dollars. Even the splurge tier is merciful; the tasting-menu Vietnamese fine dining scene in Saigon and Hanoi, genuinely world-class now, runs 40 to 70 dollars a head where equivalent ambition in Bangkok costs double and in Paris quadruple.

Coffee deserves its own line: the egg coffee, coconut coffee and slow-drip ca phe culture charges 1 to 2.50 dollars for some of the most interesting cups on earth.

Accommodation scales absurdly. Clean budget doubles: 15 to 25 dollars. The boutique tier is Vietnam's sweet spot: 35 to 60 dollars buys atmospheric, design-conscious hotels in Hoi An's old town or Hanoi's French Quarter that would cost 200 in Europe. Five-star international brands in Saigon: 120 to 180, among the cheapest five-star pricing anywhere.

Getting around: domestic flights between the big three cities cost 40 to 80 dollars, the scenic trains 25 to 50 for soft sleepers, and the open-tour buses less still. Grab rides across town rarely pass 3 dollars.

The route and its price tags

The classic two-weeker prices like this per couple, mid-range: Hanoi four nights with food crawl and Old Quarter wandering, about 450 dollars. Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay overnight cruise, the mid-tier boats being very much the move, 220 to 300 for two. Fly to Da Nang, base in Hoi An four nights: 500 including the tailoring you will not resist. Finish with Saigon three nights plus Mekong day trip: 420.

Add internal flights and trains at about 250 for two, and the fortnight's ground total lands near 2,100 dollars, with almost no compromises made anywhere.

Book the bay cruise and any day tours on Klook, where Vietnam inventory is deep and the promo codes stack; our Klook review covers that. For the e-visa, use only the official government portal; the lookalike sites charge triple for nothing.

The honest annoyances, priced

Vietnam's scams are small-denomination but persistent: the taxi meter that sprints, the cyclo price that mutates, the 2 dollar coconut that becomes 10 at handover. None of it endangers you; all of it taxes the unprepared by a few dollars a day. Fixed defenses: Grab for city rides, agreed prices before any service, small bills in pocket. Airport pickups are the one place I pre-book a fixed-price car through Kiwitaxi, because arriving at midnight into a taxi negotiation is nobody's best self; the transfer guide ranks the options.

Data is gloriously cheap: local SIMs cost a few dollars, or land connected with an Airalo eSIM installed at home, a few dollars more for zero hassle, compared in the eSIM guide.

Insurance: scooter accidents are the single biggest tourist medical expense in Vietnam. If you will ride, and in Hoi An you will be tempted, make sure your policy covers it and your license status is legal; EKTA covers riders with the right add-on, and our scooter rental guide explains the license fine print that voids most claims.

Why the value persists

Vietnam's prices climb slowly, a few percent a year, while its quality climbs fast. The hotels get more stylish, the food scene more celebrated, the trains and airports better, and the dong stays soft against the dollar. That widening quality-to-price gap is the actual secret behind a decade of best value headlines, and 2026 shows no sign of closing it.

As Indie Traveller's annual budget rankings put it this year:

Vietnam remains a highly searched destination due to outstanding value, rich culture, and diverse landscapes, from historical Hanoi to colourful Hoi An.

Run your own dates through the trip calculator, watch for the shoulder months, and bring stretchy trousers. The country will handle the rest for pocket change.

The receipts: three real days in Vietnam

Theory aside, here are three actual day-ledgers from the classic route, two people, mid-range intent.

A Hanoi day: pho breakfasts, 4 dollars. Grab rides across the Old Quarter day, 6. Temple of Literature and Hoa Lo entries, 8. Bun cha lunch at a fan-cooled institution, 7. Egg coffees, 5. Water puppet theater, 12. Massive grilled-fish dinner at Cha Ca La Vong with beers, 26. Day total for two: 68 dollars, plus the 42-dollar boutique room. Everything included: 110.

A Hoi An day: banh mi breakfasts from the famous cart, 4. Bicycle rentals, 4. An Bang beach morning, sunbeds included, 6. Tailoring deposit for two shirts and a dress, 85 (the day's happy anomaly). Cao lau lunch, 6. Old-town lantern evening with riverside dinner, 24. Day total: 129 with the tailoring, 44 without, plus a 55-dollar heritage-house room.

A Saigon day: cafe sua da and banh mi, 5. War Remnants Museum, 4. Grab rides, 8. Com tam lunch, 6. Bui Vien people-watching beers, 8. Rooftop cocktail splurge at a skybar, 22. Street barbecue dinner feast, 20. Day total: 73, room at 48.

The pattern across all three: the country simply refuses to let two people spend more than 130 dollars a day without deliberately trying, and the trying (skybars, tailoring) is itself priced at half-Western rates.

Booking Vietnam right: the sequence

The optimal booking order, learned the slightly hard way:

First the flights, on the calendar view, with the open-jaw pattern (into Hanoi, out of Saigon) that saves a backtrack flight and prices within dollars of round trips.

Second the e-visa, on the official government portal only, two-plus weeks out, screenshotting the approval.

Third the internal spine: the two domestic flights or sleeper-train legs, booked a week or two ahead in season, loosely otherwise.

Fourth the first two nights in Hanoi and the Ha Long cruise (the one item that rewards research and advance booking; the mid-tier boats sell out and the bottom tier earns its price).

And nothing else: Vietnam's guesthouse and hotel inventory is deep, spontaneous, and cheaper negotiated on the ground or booked two days out. The half-planned trip is the correct trip here, and the calculator's totals leave generous room for the country's one guaranteed budget overrun: staying longer than planned, which happens to almost everyone still solvent enough to change a flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 2-week Vietnam trip cost?expand_more

For two people including flights from the US: roughly 2,800 to 3,400 dollars at budget level, 4,000 to 5,000 mid-range with boutique hotels and internal flights, and comfortably under 8,000 even at near-luxury. On the ground, Vietnam is one of the cheapest excellent destinations anywhere.

How much is food in Vietnam?expand_more

Street food classics like pho and banh mi run 1.50 to 3 dollars. A full restaurant meal is 5 to 10 dollars, and a genuinely fancy dinner for two with drinks rarely passes 50. Eating spectacularly is the cheapest part of the country.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?expand_more

Most Western travelers use the e-visa, valid 90 days with multiple entries, applied for online for 25 dollars. Processing takes a few working days; apply a couple of weeks before flying and use only the official government portal.

When is the cheapest time to visit Vietnam?expand_more

April, May, September and October are the shoulder sweet spots with decent nationwide weather and lower prices. Weather varies wildly by region; the north has real winters and the center has a fall typhoon season, so match dates to your route rather than the whole country.

Is Vietnam cheaper than Thailand?expand_more

Slightly, yes. Comparable comfort runs 10 to 20 percent less in Vietnam, mostly in food and accommodation. Thailand wins on infrastructure polish and island variety; Vietnam wins on price, coffee and the north's scenery. Full comparison in our Bali vs Thailand and Vietnam vs Japan pieces.
